Why Should My Wisdom Teeth Be Removed?

If your wisdom teeth can establish normally without threatening your healthy mouth, then there is no need to have them extracted. In most cases, the third molars grow in sideways or only partially grow in, which can cause serious discomfort and oral health problems. Part of the reason these issues occur is that, over time, humans have developed smaller and smaller jaw bones. Unfortunately, most people’s jaws today are too small to fit the extra molars.

Wisdom teeth can cause the following problems if they are left untreated for an extended period of time:

  • Shifting of your healthy teeth – Wisdom teeth can crowd your other teeth and cause bite problems, even after patients have had braces. This is especially common on the lower jaw line: these teeth often cause the lower front teeth to crowd together and become crooked.
  • Tooth damage – The third molar can damage the adjacent tooth if it grows in sideways or causes infection. In severe cases, the wisdom tooth can grow in completely sideways and run into the roots of the second molar, causing irreparable damage to your healthy tooth.
  • Infections – Wisdom teeth have a tendency to become partially trapped beneath the gums, which leaves space for harmful bacteria to grow. Untreated infections can spread throughout the mouth and cause very serious
  • Cysts and tumors – Cysts and even tumors can form around an impacted or infected wisdom tooth. Such conditions can cause serious damage to the facial bone tissue if they are not treated quickly.

Removing wisdom teeth before they have fully developed can prevent these potential issues, and oral examinations are the only way to detect third molars before they have emerged from the gums. In some cases, not all of these teeth will need to be removed, but the only way to know for sure is to have regular dental exams.
